Operations, Technology & Finance

The multi-skilled teams within our Operations, Finance & Business Management and Technology business areas help create the competitive advantage that makes J.P. Morgan a leading financial services firm.

The integration between these business areas allows us to constantly break new ground and is a key driver in the ongoing development of the firm. As a graduate on this programme you will have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and it is also your chance to interact with J.P. Morgan from across EMEA. You'll learn core business and management skills to help you grow within the business.

What is Operations, Finance & Business Management?

Operations, Finance & Business Management provides all the functions and processes that underpin the firm's sales, trading, cash management and other business activities. The Operations team delivers process support for core business activities, from transactions, measurement and analysis to client services. Finance is a growing area that works with a diverse set of functions with the primary aim of delivering financial information to the business centrally, to the regulators, and to the business lines. In South Africa we have a small-scale Business Management function which works closely with senior management across the firm on budget control and reporting, compliance, strategic planning and special projects. There are also a number of strategic functions that guide and drive our firm, from Legal to Human Resources, Marketing and Communications.

By joining the Operations, Technology & Finance programmes, you will gain exposure to almost every business area of the bank, ranging from the trading floor to back-office reporting. You will be involved in the entire process of delivering solutions to address the needs of the business. The process involves working closely with teams in the business to identify their requirements and providing a solution to fill their needs. You will be exposed to cutting edge development tools, methodologies and concepts due to the continuous evolution of technology in the Investment Banking environment. Part of the role involves liaison with development teams in international offices in order to integrate systems and services into the business.

Operations, Finance & Business Management training

After training in the local office you will get the opportunity to rotate through various business areas and strategic functions abroad, giving you experience of both project and line work. It's impossible to say exactly what you'll be doing because there are so many possibilities.

Do you have what it takes?

The relentless demand for continuous improvement and innovation would be daunting for most people. But of course we don't hire most people. We are looking for individuals with high intelligence and intellectual curiosity and strong analytical and problem-solving skills. You will also need to be a confident communicator and enthusiastic team-player. As the business continues to grow and diversify, you will need to be flexible about roles and locations if you are to make the most of the career development opportunities on offer here.

What is Technology?

Technology is critical to the performance of J.P. Morgan. You will be developing your skills using some of the most advanced systems in the marketplace, but you will also enjoy the opportunities to build a uniquely broad experience as you tackle challenges across the business. It's not just about planning, building, or implementing new systems - it's about having real commercial acumen and a focused strategy to deliver better client service.

J.P. Morgan has one of the best technology platforms in the global financial sector. Because technology is a decisive contributor to the success and growth of J.P. Morgan, our investment in systems development is substantial and continuous. This creates a very exciting environment in which to launch and develop a career in technology.

Members of the technology team also attend technical presentations provided by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, South African Futures Exchange and the Bond Exchange of South Africa, as well as the South African Reserve Bank. By joining Technology, you will gain a wide range of technical, business and people skills.

Rotating between roles

Flexible rotations give you wide exposure to different types of role while allowing you to make a personal impact on our work from the start. Technology is structured around a strategy of Plan, Build and Operate, and analysts work in the key areas of business analysis and application development. However, no graduate stays in any one role for too long and, in some smaller teams, graduate roles combine activities from a number of these disciplines.

Technology training

Our training philosophy is based on breadth and depth: that means a focus on communication and leadership skills as well as deep instruction in technology and finance. We want to produce rounded, versatile business professionals.

Our graduate development programme has been designed for high-performers so the learning curve is steep. Much of your learning happens on the job during the rotation programme: while developing specialist skills you also build a solid grasp of the bigger business picture; this helps you make the important decisions about your ultimate career direction. The business is changing fast so we review and upgrade the curriculum every year to ensure you get the skills you need to flourish as a business professional and future leader.

Do you have what it takes?

We recruit graduates from technical backgrounds such as Mathematical Sciences, Engineering and Information Systems. The important thing is that you are genuinely excited by the interaction between business and technology in a global environment. You must also be a quick learner and an expert communicator with the resilience and flexibility to cope with fast-changing situations.
